We love taking a bath and giving pedicure to our pets. However, we usually overlook that just like us, they do have teeth and whatever they eat, it can contribute in the buildup of plaques. These are bacteria that constantly forms on teeth. Our dogs don’t naturally have bad breath. If you smell something off in their mouth, this could be because of their poor dental hygiene. Of course it’s our responsibility o look after these areas.
So what should you do to keep their mouth fresh smelling? Number 1 is to brush their teeth. Nothing beats a proper tooth cleaning through regular brushing. Use a toothpaste specially made for dogs. Do not use toothpaste for humans because it contains harmful chemicals. Just be gentle as you do it, so that they would remember that brushing is a great experience and nothing to be afraid of. If brushing is kind of difficult for you, you can do the tooth wipes. By using the wipes, you are cleaning their tooth to prevent buildup of plaques. The only downside of this is that, you won’t be able to remove the food residues at the corners of the teeth and gums.
If your dog doesn’t agree on both techniques, you can try dog dental treats or chews. this is similar to regular treats except that, while they chew, the treat releases enzymes that cleans up the dog’s mouth and make their breath fresh.
Lastly, consulting a dentist to have a professional cleaning is still the best way to do it. If you have a budget you can do this on a regular basis. The doctor knows what’s best for your dog’s teeth condition and can recommend maintenance for it. hey would notice if their are some irregularities or abnormalities that needs attention.
